The Hydrogen atom has special significance in quantum mechanics as a simple physical system for which an exact solution to Schrodinger's equation exists, and can be used to predict physical properties of a common substance.

In 1913, Niels Bohr deduced the spectral lines of the hydrogen making several assumptions (see The Bohr Model. These assumptions are not necessary when using Schroedingers equation, they follow from the equations, as was proven later.
