An organization that is structured as a hierarchy. Members chiefly communicate with their immediate superior and with their immediate subordinates. Structuring organizations in this way is useful among other things because it can reduce the communication overhead.

Organization that are not organized in this manner are sometimes described as having a flat, or single-level, structure.

Although it is not always the case, very often superiors have higher status? and power than their subordinates.

Hierarchology? is the term coined by Dr. [Laurence J. Peter]? (of Peter Principle fame) to refer to the study of hierarchical organizations and the behavior of its members.

Hierarchial organizations include corporations, governments, and the [Roman Catholic church]?.
