Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel (1883 - 1971) was French fashion designer.
Chanel was born destitute, out of wedlock, yet rose to be one of the
most influential figures in haute couture in the 20th century.
The nickname Coco was evidently aquired at La Rotonde, a cafe frequented
by members of a French cavalry regiment.
