Evolution of an idea

Originally coined (at the time just by anecdote, but now seen to be somewhat controversial) by Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene as a 'meme', such that memes may evolve similarly to genes (with parallels to mutation and natural selection). Expanded upon by Susan Blackmore in her book The Meme Machine.
