Electronic "art" music is a regrettably vague term for the (primarily) academic branch of Electronic music. Electronic art music suffers from naming difficulties similar to "modern classical music" (modern music composed in the traditions of Classical music.)

Many of the first Electronic compositions drew widespread interest, but little enthusiasm. Beginning in the 1960s, however, Electronic techniques and instruments were embraced by popular musicians, eventually leading to more mainstream styles also embraced by the term "Electronic Music". Electronic "art" music became the uncomfortable term for contemporary electronic music composed often by academics and professional composers, to explore the the edges of musical possibility.

History

The history of Electronic "art" music (hereinafter reffered to as simply "Electronic music") really began in the 1940s.
