The Crimean War was fought between 1854 and 1856. The French and the British fought as allies against the Russians and eventually won the war. This was the only war which Britain fought on the European continent between the [Napoleonic wars]? and the Great War. Well known incidents, include the [Charge of the Light Brigade]?, the [thin red line]? and the siege of Sevastopol?.

This is the war during which [Florence Nightingale]? came to the fore with the introduction of modern nursing methods. It was also the first war in which media coverage played an important part and the first in which use was made of railways.

Although the Allies won, the campaign was generally thought to have been incompetently managed. As a result major changes were made in British military procedures and structures following the war.
