Name given to the portion of North America south of the [Rio Grande]? river, consisting of modern-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. In some usages, Mexico is not considered a constituent part.

The term is of use when a distinction needs to be made between the primarily Spanish-speaking countries so-named and the primarily English-speaking parts of North America to the north.
