The abbreviation
CE (for "
Common Era") is used to denote years counted from the traditional reckoning of the birth of
Christ. It is equivalent to
AD (for "
Anno Domini"), but is preferred by academics because it does not force the reader or writer to accept any Christian theological claims. This is significant because it recognizes that many people in modern society are not of the Christian faith. The symbol "CE" is often placed after the year rather than before (that is, the year "AD 100" is written "100 CE").
