A bar is:

In law:

  1. a railing in a courtroom that encloses the area around judge where prisoners are made to sit or where the business of the court is conducted in civil cases
  2. a court or tribunal that hands down judgement.
  3. figuratively, a particular system of courts or the courts in general "the bar of justice."
  4. the barrier in the English Inns of Court that formerly separated the seats of the benchers or readers from the body of the hall occupied by the students, hence, one is officially a lawyer when one crosses the barrier and is "admitted to the bar."
  5. the whole community of persons authorized to secure or dispense justice, including the barristers or lawyers qualified to practice in the courts of a jurisdiction, as well as the judges thereof
  6. the profession of being a lawyer or barrister.
