Aurangzeb was the ruler of the Mughal Empire from 1658 until 1707. He is commonly considered the last of the great Mughal emperors. He made a substantial push for territorial gains in the Deccan?, battling Shivaji? of the Marathas?. The Mughal Empire reached its largest geographical size under his rule. However, this is seen by many to be a Pyrric victory; the empire could not hold together from the strain of constant military campaigns, and after the death of Aurangzeb, the Mughal Empire entered a long decline.
