Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788-1827) was a French physicist who contributed significantly to the establishment of the [wave theory of light]? and optics. Fresnel studied the behaviour of light both theoretically and experimentally. An important technological innovation was the development of compound lens systems, rather than mirrors, for use in lighthouses.
