Phil Zimmermann is the creator of PrettyGoodPrivacy (PGP). He was the first to make asymmetric encryption available to the masses - which was the reason why he was soon charged by the FBI (the FederalBureauOfInvestigation?) and he nearly had to go to prison for his achievement.
