Allegedly the oldest Brewery in Britain, this isn't wholely true as there were many breweries around before Shepherd Neame, but many of them have closed or merged, or simply were never written about, as beer was taken for granted in days of yore - safer than the disease ridden water, with the added benefit of sugars, proteins and alcohol! The bitters of Kent are under threat from cheap beer that is imported from the European continent, flooding the market and damaging the livelyhood of the local pub/brewers. THis is a pity as they have a distinctive flavour, and are full of a long and illustrious history.
Allegedly the oldest Brewery? in Britain, this is not entirely true since many breweries predate Shepherd Neame, however many of them have closed or merged, or simply were never written about. The bitter beers of Kent (and the rest of the UK) are increasingly under threat from cheaper beer (mainly lager) imported from the European continent., This is principally due to inequities between the imposition of duties in many European mainland countries and in the UK rather than the physical cost of production. This is a pity since they have a distinctive flavour.
