In 1989, many people fled East Germany by crossing the "green" border from Hungary to Austria. Many others peacefully demonstrated against the ruling party. On November 9th, 1989 the Berlin Wall fell and with it the whole communist system of East Germany. Both parts of Germany united into something unlike what had ever been before, a new post cold war Germany amidst Europe. The forces within East Germany , who had prompted the criticisms and uprisings preceding the fall of the wall, were shoved aside by the majority fears of being left behind in the oncoming Warsaw Pact collapse. on October 3 1990, Gorbatchow and Reagan made a deal and the wall fell and Berlin was subsequently annexed and (re-)established as the national capital.
