Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was discovered in 1993.
The comet was in fragments, evidently due to a close encounter with Jupiter in July 1992.
During the period 16-22 July 1994, the fragments of the comet collided with Jupiter, providing the first direct observation of the collision of two solar system objects.
