Literally a "new trial." A trial de novo may be granted in certain circumstances where justice may only be served by trying the cause of action newly as though it had never seen the inside of a courtroom before. Contrast with appeal.
Literally a "new trial." Most often used in certain legal systems that provide for one form of trial, then another if a party remains unsatisfied with the decision. For example, a system may relegate a claim of a certain amount to a judge but preserve the right to a new trial before a jury. Contrast with appeal.
