Fritz Lang (1890--1976) Viennese film director.

Below describes "Metropolis", probably the most famous of Fritz Lang's films.

science fiction film by Fritz Lang in which society has been divided into two rigid castes: one of planners, who live above the earth in wealth, and another of workers who live underground in poverty. One of the workers ventures belowground and is astonished by what she sees; she makes efforts to reconcile the two ways of life. Features special effects and set design that still impress audiences nearly 80 years later.

The film was "rediscovered" in the 1980's, when American film director and producer Francis Ford Coppola brought out a restored version with a new soundtrack.
