The main stories concerning these figures are in the Tanach (Hebrew Bible, aka Old Testament and in the New Testament. A wealth of additional stories and legends amplifying the accounts in the Tanach can be found in the Jewish genre of rabbinical exegesis known as Midrash. Similarly, some information can be found in the Apocrypha, Jewish inter-testamental works.

An alphabetical list of people featured in the Bible.

TBD: Someone went to the trouble of creating all these link placeholders, so I left them. But I cleaned them up, too. The concept of names in Wikipedia — especially when applied to Biblical names — is problematic. What to do about multiple names? What about the ambiguity of the unique people named John in the New Testament? These issues should be addressed before too many of these get filled in.

This kind of problem has been discussed in a few places, and I've started rambling about it at Naming conventions/Talk. -- Claudine

See also: ["The twelve disciples and the women who followed Jesus"], Copyright 1999-2001 Robert N. Cramer. TBD: maybe a Wikipedian chould contact Mr. Cramer about putting his writeup into the public domain. It's very thorough and would make an excellent contribution to the Wikipedia.
