Unterseeboot 571 (U-571) was a Type VIIC submarine of the Kriegsmarine. Her keel was laid down June 8, 1940 by [Blohm and Voss]?, of [Hamburg, Germany]?. She was commissioned May 22, 1941 with Kapitänleutnant Helmut Möhlmann in command. Möhlmann commanded her until May 1943 when he was relieved by Oberleutnant zur See Gustav Lüssow who commanded her until her loss.

U-571 conducted 11 patrols, sinking 7 ships totalling 47,169 tons and damaging one other displacing 11,394 tons. On March 22, 1943, she was attacked by an aircraft in the North Atlantic and was damaged so badly that she had to return to base. On April 22, 1943, she had to return to base because the commander was badly injured in an accident on the conning tower. On January 28, 1944 she was attacked by an Australian Sunderland? aircraft from RAAF Squadronn 461/D west of Ireland and was sunk by depth charges.

U-571 did not suffer any casualties to her crew during her career until she was sunk, when she lost 52 dead -- all hands.

"U-571" is a 2000 movie in which a German submarine is boarded by disguised American submariners trying to capture their Enigma cipher machine. It is entirely fictional; while Enigma machines or their codebooks were captured from U-110, U-559?, and U-505?, U-571 was not involved in anything like the events depicted in this movie.
