The Libertarian Party was created in December 11, 1971 in the home of David Nolan.

Libertarians stand for individual liberty, free-market economy, [civil liberties]? (see American Civil Liberties Union), a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade and opposition to the "[war on drugs]?". They hold that individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the right of others to live in whatever manner they choose. To this end, they want to reduce the size and intrusiveness of government and cut taxes.

In one of the closest elections in American history, the LP 2000 presidential ticket ([Harry Browne]? for president and former [Bellflower, CA]? mayor Art Olivier for VP) gets 382,892 votes. 34 Libertarians are elected to office, Massachusetts U.S. Senate candidate Carla Howell wins a record 11.9% of the vote, and the LP's candidates for U.S. House win 1.6 million votes.
