The
state is the primary political subdivision of the
United States. Note that this is somewhat confusing, in that the word
state also refers to sovereign politicial entities, such as the
United States (see
state).
(Other countries with states in this sense include Australia, India, Malaysia and Nigeria.)
Some potentially confusing facts concerning U.S. states include:
- "Georgia" is the name of both a U.S. state and an independent nation in Caucasia
- New York is both a state, a county in that state, and a city in that county
- Washington is both a state, and a city in the District of Columbia
