In doing so you may find some straightedge people don't intake caffeine, or they choose to be vegetarian or vegan. They also feel having a clear mindset is a REAL way to approach life and/or spirituality.
Originally coined 'straight edge' by the hardcore/punk band Minor Threat in the early-mid 80s. Sometimes abbreviated sXe. sXe was also symbolized by large black X's marked on a persons hands.
A straight edge lifestyle is not a philosophy and is not associated with or based on any religion. It is something one does without worrying about philosophizing. Straight edge is also a genre of music advocating a straight edge lifestyle.
There are a few accounts of straightedge people being violent towards others who are not, but the great majority of straightedge people do not promote violence at all.
