A series of computer games which set in the Star Wars universe that attempted to "realistically" simulate the experience of combat in the starfighters of both the Rebel Alliance's, and, in later games, the Galactic Empire's, starfighters. To complete the game, players must complete missions ranging from simple dogfights with opposition starfighters, to escort duty, to attacks on larger opposition ships. The first game in the series, "X-Wing", and the last, "X-Wing Alliance" featured as their concluding missions recreations of the attacks on the first and second [/Death Star]?s respectively, though in both cases they were not particularly successful and felt very much like tacked-on additions to the main game.

As well as dogfighting designed to resemble the frewheeling duels of World War I, the games also offered the challenge of managing power resources, wingmen, and maximum using weapons effectively.

Most of the games featured attractive, hand-drawn (and well-voiced) cutscenes at crucial points in the storyline. Though nothing like as extensive as the [Wing Commander]? series they games owed much to, they were quite well-done. They also of course featured music from the movie trilogy, which in some games actually responded to the player's actions and condition under cleverly-chosen constraints.
