Sophia, Electress of Hanover (1630-1714) to 1714. As the daughter of Elizabeth Stuart, in turn the daughter of James I Stuart of England and Scotland, she was inserted into the line of succession to the British throne behind Queen Anne for the purpose of cutting off any claim by the Catholic [James III]? Stuart. Upon her death, the heir presumptive became her son [George I]?, who was made king when Queen Anne died.

Under British law, only descendants of Sophia are in line for the throne. They must additionally not be Catholics, not marry to Catholics and get permission from the British monarch for any marriage they make. Presently there are almost 5000 descendants of Sophia although not all are in the line of succession. Additionally anyone in the line of succession has automatic British citizenship, despite the fact that most of them are German nationals.
