[Home]Simon J Kissane/Deletion of pages

Someone (at first I presumed LMS, but he said he did not so I withdraw that allegation with my appologies) has taken to totally deleting pages, including all prior revisions, without giving any explanation or holding any discussion before he does so, and seemingly because he simply doesn't agree with the opinions addressed within. These pages have included [Reasons for deleting page titles]?, [Wikipedia vandalism]?. Below is all the content he deleted that could be saved. (Since he's doing this, I think its wise in the future that if you want to say anything on Wikipedia that people disagree with, you better save it elsewhere, lest he decides to delete it totally.)

In an early version of this page, I also claimed someone deleted two other pages also, in addition to the one's I mentioned above. I am not too sure now whether they did or did not, and I would not want to accuse people of doing something they didn't do. That is one of the bad things about totally deleting pages -- no public record is kept that it was done, and hence all one has to rely upon is one's memory of the page previously existing.

Examples of these pages -- [wikipedia vandalism]?:

Wikipedia vandalism

In the case of Wikipedia, as all modifications are authorized and none can be truly destructive, vandalism refers to undesired modification of its pages.

Since most modifications are desired and encouraged (see Wikipedia policy, Be bold in updating pages), only the most egregious cases of editing can be considered vandalism.

Even downright bad jokes and other nonsense are not generally considered vandalism, and often are simply cases of misunderstanding, confusion, or humor unnecessary to the entry.

Cases of Wikipedia vandalism involve the total replacement of on-topic content with off-topic content, often vulgar? or obscene, especially with the inclusion of off-server images.

The most inviting target for such vandalism is the HomePage. Its contents have been replaced at least ten times by anonymous people with off-topic material, which is why editing of the page is currently restricted to Wikipedians with administrator access. To gain access to editing the HomePage, e-mail Jimbo Wales.

Response to Wikipedia vandalism

There is a zero-tolerance policy for such cases, which will be removed as soon as discovered. Archival of such cases elsewhere on Wikipedia is forbidden by Larry Sanger.
