The F/A-18 fighter (about 60 to 70 in service), built in Australia under license from the U.S. manufacturer, is the principal combat aircraft of the RAAF, backed by 35 U.S.-built F-111C F-111G and RF-111 strike aircraft, and PC-3 Orion Patrol and Maritime Strike aircraft (several recently -- and secretly - upgraded to the EP-3 type). Other aircraft types, such as C130 transports, BAE Hawk strike/support/trainer jets and others are also operated by it.
