Roy Harris Jenkins (1920-) joined the House of Commons in 1945, was Home Secretary (1965-1967) and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1967-???), and the first ever British citizen to be
President of the European Commission (1975-1981). He later played a role in the formation of the SDP, unsuccessfully contesting the seat of Warrington in 1982. Since 1987 he has been a member of the
House of Lords (as Lord of Hillhead). In 2001 he published a biography of
