Tsja - is there a local name (or names - both positive and negative?) for the particular flavor of revival style Cuypers used? It's more or less [Gothic revival]?, but with those wonderful contextual additions that make 19th century architecture so nationalistic and fun in Europe and so - hmmmm - arbitrary in America (we didn't have any logic behind our revival styles - it was whatever the patron wished to emulate). --MichaelTinkler

The style of the Rijksmuseum is a combination of [Gothic revival]? and [Renaissance revival]?(?) (neo-gotiek and neo-renaissance in Dutch). The protestants were not to happy with the gothic elements, because the referred to catholicism. They called the building ironically the 'episcopal palace'. --Tsja

Perhaps a explanation of what Rijk stands for should be included. Something like national, right? --rmhermen
