1). A mythical
bird, sacred in ancient
Egypt. Said to live for 500 years, the Phoenix was a solitary male bird with beautiful gold and red plumage. At the end of its life cycle, the Phoenix built itself a nest of twigs which it then ignited; both nest and bird burned fiercely and were reduced to ashes, from which a new Phoenix would arise. Present in other mythologies too, although descriptions (and life span) varied, the Phoenix became popular in early
Christian art and literature as a symbol of the resurrection
?.
2). A minor southern
constellation, introduced by Johann Bayer in 1603.
3). The capital city of
Arizona.
4). A minor character in the
Iliad, one of
Achilles' men who goes with
Odysseus and
Ajax to urge him to re-enter battle, giving the most passionate speech of the three. There is no doubt that this was a later addition to the epic, since Achilles continually talks to his guests using a special dual case, not plural.
