Peptidoglycan is used in
bacterial
cell walls. It can be made visible by
gram staining in
gram positive bacteria.
Chemical structure
The peptidoglycan layers in the bacterial cell wall consist of a lattice structure of two overlapping
sugars, namely [N-acetyl glucosamine]
? (NAG) and [N-acetyl muramic acid]
? (NAM), that are interlinked by
amino acids. The exact structure varies with the
species.
