Narrow gauge
railways are theoretically those gauges of
track less than the
standard gauge. In practice the narrow gauge is generally considered to be a gauge of three feet or less. Narrow gauge is often used for mountain railways where the narrowness of the gauge allows for tigher turning radii. Famous narrow gauge railways include the Festiniog in
Wales and the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway in
Kent.
