Monroe Doctrine

The doctrine that the Americas is the sphere of influnence of the United States, and the European powers should not interfere.

The doctrine is credited to James Monroe, who was president of the United States at the time, though the doctrine was actually developed by Monroe's secretary of state, John Quincy Adams.
