Mathematical relation

A mathematical relation over the sets X₁, ..., X_n is any subset of X₁ × ... × X_n, that is, the Cartesian product of these sets. An important type of mathematical relation is the binary relation.

The notion of mathematical relation is fundamental in the relational model for databases.
