Mary Cassatt

American painter, born Pittsburgh (1844-1926).

Mary Cassatt lived most of her professional career in Europe, like many of her contemporaries among American artists and literary figures. Cassatt began studying painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia (1861-1865), then studied in Paris. Her first painting was accepted for the Salon in 1872. She was introduced to [Edgar Degas]? in 1874, and she first exhibited in an Impressionist show in 1879. From then until 1886 she was an active member of the Impressionist circle.
