The
longbow was used in the Middle Ages both for hunting and as a weapon of war. It reached its zenith of perfection as a weapon in the hands of English and Welsh archers. These were very difficult weapons to master since the draw-weight was very great and a considerable degree of practice was required to produce the swift and effective fire required in combat conditions.
The longbow was to prove decisive in a number of mediaeval battles fought by the English, most famously the Battle of Agincourt
