Kashubians (also "Kassubians") came into the region between the Oder and Vistula rivers over a thousand years ago. For much of the period following they were subjects of the Holy Roman Empire. At first they lived in that part of the land later called Pomerania, named after the Pomeranen, who also moved there; they were a small minority in Pomerania. Over time they spread and came to live east of Danzig. Their capital city was Kolberg in Pomerania.

In the modern day some 200,000 Kashubians still speak Kashubian, a West Slavic dialect, mainly in north central Poland.
