The Irish Civil War (1922-1923) was a conflict between supporters and opponents of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921 which had established the [Irish Free State]?.

The conflict petered out into a de facto victory for the pro-treaty side.

As with most civil wars the legacy of "brother-against-brother" was very bitter and continued to have a strong influence on politics in the Republic of Ireland until near the end of the 20th Century. The two largest political parties in the Republic are still Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, the descendents of the anti-treaty and pro-treaty forces respectively in the Civil War.
