Insulin pump is a device used for administering insulin in treatment of diabetes .

The device consists principally of three parts :

The rationale for insulin pump was that it would mimick actions of pancreatic? beta (B) cells transducing raised blood glucose levels into administration of increased doses of insulin.

In practice this device turned out to be costly, cumbersome and potentially dangerous. It needed close supervision on the side of the patient and medical personnel.
The danger connected with insulin pump could be faulty mechanism could administer too large dose of insulin thus producing an attack of hypoglycemia in the patient.

It could not be used in larger groups of diabetics therefore it was practically abandoned in favour of intensive insulinotherapy.
