The Wasp Factory (1984) is Iain Banks's first novel. It was met with very mixed reviews when it appeared. Some reviewers loved it, while others were put off by the violence.

The first-person narrator, Frank Cauldhame, is a young psychopath. Before doing things, Frank consults the wasp factory, a contraption built to divine things by looking at where wasps let into it perish.
