Homo is Latin for man. In biology it denotes the genus? that contains modern humans (Homo sapiens or "Man the Thinker") as well as a number of extinct humans.

Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, Order Primates, Family Hominidae, Genus Homo

 Species habilis? (extinct)
 Species rudolfensis? (extinct)
 Species ergaster? (extinct)
 Species erectus? (extinct)
 Species heidelbergensis? (extinct)
 Species neanderthalensis? (extinct)
 Species sapiens

Note that the division of extinct members of the genus Homo is still under discussion. H. habilis, H. erectus and (of course) H. sapiens are generally recognized, but H. rudolfensis and H. ergaster are often classified under H. habilis and H. erectus respectively, while H. heidelbergensis and H. neanderthalensis are often classified as sub-species of H. sapiens.

Also, homo- is a Greek-derived prefix meaning same.
