The start of the later Switzerland: Commonly known, the Swiss history basically started at the year 1291? with a contract, the so called Bundesbrief?, between leaders of three regions called Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden signed as the legend tells, at a place called Rütli in todays central Switzerland.

Switzerland's independence and neutrality have long been honored by the major European powers and Switzerland was not involved in either of the two World Wars (World War I nor World War II). The political and economic integration of Europe over the later 20th century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and international organizations, may be rendering obsolete the country's concern for neutrality.
