The Grandmaster title is awarded by FIDE after a player has met a serious of chess tournament results against fellow Grandmaster players. Normally three results (or norms) are required before FIDE confer the title on a player.

There are other milestones a player can achieve to get the title, such as qualifying for the Candidates tournament (now defunct). Fischer got his Grandmaster title this way.

Grandmasters normally have an Elo of over 2500. Players from 2300-2500 normally have acquired the [International Master]? (IM) title
