Baroque music often has continuo accompaniment on a keyboard instrument (such as the harpsichord,) in order to fill out the chords. The music for this is not written out in full, instead the continuo musician would be expected to harmonise the music given the bass line and information about inversions he or she should play. Although the performer can insert trills and passing notes, there is not really very much scope for more varied improvisation. Continuo playing is dictated by strict rules that have to be followed.
