Very fine tubes leading from the
ovaries of mammals into the
uterus. There are two fallopian tubes, attached to either side of the caudal
? end of the uterus, and each terminating at or near one or the other ovary, respectively. When an
ovum is developing in an ovary, it is encapsulated in a sac known as a follicle
?. On maturiy of the ovum, the follicle ruptures, allowing the ovum to escape and enter the fallopian tube and begin to travel toward the uterus. This trip takes hours or days. If the ovum is fertilize
?d while in the fallopian tube, then it implants in the
endometrium when it reaches the uterus, which signals the beginning of
pregnancy.
