Do Not Adjust Your Set

Do Not Adjust Your Set was a classic childrens' televison series shown on British commercial televison in the late 1960s. The show took its name from the message (frequently seen on the TV screen in those days) which was displayed when there was a problem with transmission. Although originally conceived as a childrens' programme, it quickly acquired a cult crossover following amongst many adults.

This was an early appearance of many actors and comedians who were to become more famous later: [David Jason]?, [Denise Coffey]?, [Graham Chapman]?, [Eric Idle]?, John Cleese and others. The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band performed a song in each programme. The programme was a series of sketches, often bizarre and surrealistic, frequently satirical, a style which was to become more famous with the later appearance of several cast members in Monty Python's Flying Circus: at least one sketch was reused in the Python series. Strange animations between sketches were supplied by the then unknown Terry Gilliam, who also graduated to Python - his `christmas cards' animation reappearing there.

One long running spoof was Captain Fantastic, a highly improbable superhero and his even more improbable adventures.
