A firearm, similar to but shorter than an ordinary rifle or musket in barrel and stock. It designed originally to be fired from horseback. As used by infantry, a more compact version of a rifle--for example, the American .30 caliber MI used during World War II was manufactured in both full-length and carbine versions.
