Brain

The supervisory center of the nervous system consisting of [grey matter]? (superficial parts) and white matter (deep parts) and serving to control and coordinate the mental, emotional, physical and memory functions. The adult human brain consists of two halves (hemispheres) and usually weighs about 1 - 1.5 kg. The intelligence of the individual is not necessarily related with the weight of the brain, but with the efficiency and number of connections between cells. Although the brain is usually referred to as the supervisory center of vertebrate?s, the same term can also be used for the invertebrate central nervous system. The brain is responsible not only for some high cognitive functions, but also for monitoring heartbeat, blood pressure, fluid balance, and body temperature. In humans the brain has three major parts, the hindbrain? (cerebellum? and the [brain stem]?), the midbrain? and the forebrain? (diencephalon? and cerebrum?). The [corpus callosum]? connects the two hemispheres of the brain. The cerebrum is the largest section of the brain and its surface has many deep fissures (sulci) and grooves (gyri), giving an excessively wrinkled appearance to the brain.
