An ad hominem argument is a logical fallacy which represents an attack against the character of a person rather than a refutation of his or her particular argument. Ad hominem arguments are unfortunately common in politics, where the attack serves to point out character flaws as a means of avoiding discussion of the relevance or truthfulness of what the person under attack originally said.
