Agent Orange is a herbicide? that was invented in the 1940s and used by the United States during the Vietnam War. Its military purpose was to remove the leaves of trees to deny the Vietcong? cover. Agent Orange, so called after the identifying bands on the storage cans, is a 1:1 mix of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid, both being herbicides. It was produced by several chemical companies. About 75 million liters of the agent were used during the Vietnam War. Today, Agent Orange use is discontinued because of the toxic and carcinogenic effects caused by dioxin? byproducts in both Vietnamese population and US war veterans.
